QUICK CHANGEOVER MODULAR SYSTEMS:

The quick change modules provide a new level of expandability and flexibility during the transition period from leaded to lead free solders. Current Pillarhouse machine designs employ the use of quick change modular baths. The baths are connected to the machine assembly via large location dowels and a mating pneumatic/electrical connector. No bolts or mechanical clamps are required to hold the baths in position. By simply removing power by hitting an E-stop, the pot can be slid out on a tray and physically removed in a matter of a few minutes. A second bath can then be put in its place containing lead free solder or a different process. Because the total bath weight is under 60 lbs, the ease of removal is generally better than the pump assemblies of competing equipment. The heat up time for the second bath is typically 30-35 minutes with a set point of 290°C or less.

CHANGING TO PB FREE

Directive 2002/95/EC of the European Parliament, and of the Council on the restriction of the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment, states that from 1st July 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE).’

This directive means that measures will have to be taken to ensure that lead is not used in the soldering process of any electronic/electrical (with exceptions) parts that are to be sold after the 1st July 2006.

Pillarhouse recognizes that our machines compatibility for lead free has been an issue that has to be resolved. Extensive tests both in-house and in the field have already been carried out over the last 3 years with the cooperation of several of our customers. The conclusion of these tests has given areas of the machines process a need for change.

These changes are dependent on the type and model of machine being used. however, the details given here should clarify any questions that present and future customers should have.
